Several years ago, results from our Ware DNA Project solved a long standing mystery for the Amherst County Virginia Ware family branch. Edward Ware and his wife, Leticia Powell, moved to Amherst County from Caroline County about 1750. In various documents, including Edward’s will, their sons were referred to as Ware, Powell, Powell Ware, or alias Ware.
This raised a question. Were these Edward’s sons or perhaps Leticia’s by a previous marriage? A DNA test of a descendant of one of Edward’s sons matched the DNA of a descendant of Edward’s brother Henry which nicely put the question to rest.
Now DNA has come through for us again, not once, but twice. Hudnell Ware III of Richmond and David Ware of Yorktown both recently tested and the results matched previous Ware test subjects. Hudnell and David are from the Spencer Ware branch of the family which is located in Essex County.
Genealogical paper trails remain essential, yet at times have gaps and leave questions unanswered. DNA testing can provide evidence and confirm relations. Ware males who do not have a close relative and not who have already tested, should consider doing so. The ladies can encourage a male relative to test. We will all benefit from connecting the many branches of our wonderful family.
