“John Henry Ware was the son of Henry Ware whose father was one of the pioneer settlers of Marion Co., Illinois. John married Polly Ann Snodgrass who was a neighbor of his family at the time. They moved to Missouri and had 11 children together several of which did not make it in life. He then married the daughter of Polly’s brother Jackson Snodgrass, Margaret Jane Snodgrass and had another 11 children with her.
He joined the Army as a Blacksmith to fight in the Civil War with three friends in Kansas City. He served in the 1st Calvary of the Union Army. He tells of his joining and of some of his experiences in the Civil War in a Diary he kept for most of his adult life. It has been published by Congressman Carl Albert who is related to the Ware’s through John’s grandmother Catherine Albert. Another contributor stated he served in Co. E 2nd Batt, Missouri State Militia.”
