A memorial service for Darlene Helwig will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Attrell’s Newberg Chapel. Mrs. Helwig died Saturday in a Hillsboro hospital of complications of lupus and diabetes. She was 58. She was born Darlene Ware on May 27, 1935, in Sandy. She graduated from Newberg High School in 1955 and Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, now Western Oregon State College, in 1964. She married Donald A. Helwig in 1957. They later divorced. Mrs. Helwig taught in an elementary school in Tillamook for five years and was a counselor in the West Linn School District until poor health forced her retirement in 1981. Subsequently she lived in Newberg, Seaside and Forest Grove. Survivors include her sons, William of Olympia and Nathan of Warren; sisters, Gail Walters of McMinnville, Lea Oma Herring and Sandra Kay LaJoie of Newberg, Colleen Peason of Fife, Wash.; former husband, of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and four grandchildren. Disposition will be by cremation. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Oregon chapter of the American Lupus Society.
