James “Big Jim” Ware – Former assistant Owen County fire chief passes away “Big Jim” remebered for love of community, special BBQ sauce

Friends and family gathered Saturday to celebrate the life of a former Owenton fire chief James “Big Jim” Ware, 76, passed away at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center Jan. 29 following a long illness. A lifelong resident of Owen County, Ware grew up in the Long Ridge area where, according to friends and family, he enjoyed blessing ones he knew through his cooking. Those close to Jim became fond of his secret barbecue sauce recipe, During Ware’s memorial service Saturday, Rita Richardson of Long Ridge said Ware was like a brother to her. Ware served for many years as a volunteer firefighter. Owenton Fire Chief J.O. Powers said riding with Ware in the firetruck was comparable to a wild roller coaster ride. “He always fed us well at the station,” Powers added. The Owenton and Owen County Volunteer Fire Departments served as pallbearers, along with Monterey and Corinth Fire Departments serving as honor guards, escorting the procession to the Mable Grove Cemetery with their firetrucks. Brian New of McDonald and New Funeral home shared Ware’s handwritten obituary that he wrote before his passing. Jim’s last words read, “God has called and I am leaving this day. Through all my years, I have enjoyed the trip. Love to all.”
