Edwin James Ware, affectionately known as “PaPa Ware”, 84, formerly of 1214 N. Limestone St., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Brookview Healthcare.
Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of the late Gladys Sanders Ware and son of the late Joshua Cleveland Ware and Jessie Mae Waldrup Ware. He was formerly self-employed as a roofer and sheet metal worker. Mr. Ware was a lifelong 32 degree mason, Hejaz Shriner, and a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran and fought in World War II along side his bother, John Edward Ware, in Patton’s 3rd Army. He was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, receiving four Bronze Service Stars. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by three sons, James Cleveland Ware of Gaffney, Van Stephen Ware of Englewood, Florida and Edwin Lee Ware and wife, Carol Ann, of Gaffney; a daughter, Denise Smith and husband, Scott, of Gaffney; a sister, Virginia Earle of Gaffney; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Cornelia Doty, and a brother, John Edward Ware.
Services were held Sunday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. in Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Clyde Thomas and the Rev. Stuart A. Kersey officiating. Interment was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was held Saturday, Feb. 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, 805 Cherokee Ave., Gaffney, SC 29340.
The family will be at the home of Edwin Lee Ware, 113 Westland Drive, Gaffney.
