Joe Vernon Ware

Mr. Joe Vernon Ware, age 81, of North Wilkesboro, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at his home. He was born July 14, 1932 in Kings Mountain, N.C. to Lemuel Light and Mable Janette Goforth Ware. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro. Mr. Ware graduated from Western Carolina University, was a life-long supporter and proud alumni and played baseball during his time in college. While a senior at Western Carolina University, Joe was signed and played baseball one year with the Chicago Cubs. He served 11 years on the Wilkes Community College Board of Trustees, served as a North Wilkesboro Town Commissioner for 5 years. He was Chairman of the Wilkes County Democratic Party, and served as President of the Senior Democrats. Mr. Ware retired from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles after 35 years of service. Joe was an avid collector of western art and novels. He loved spending time with his grandchildren at the beach. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dwight Ware.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Betty Farmer Ware of the home; three daughters, Micki Owens and husband Jeff, Kim Reynolds, Amy Huie and husband Randall; six grandchildren, Joseph Owens, Alix Reynolds, Morgan Reynolds, Adam Huie, Dalton Huie and Cole Huie.

Memorial service will be held 11:00 o’clock Friday, May 9, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro with Dr. Keith Franklin officiating. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilkes Community College Fund, c/o Allison Phillips, PO Box 120, Wilkesboro, NC 28697, to First United Methodist Church, 401 Sixth Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to Hospice of Wilkes Regional Medical Center, 1907 West Park Drive, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
