“Junior League Rummage Sale

By Hildreth Dana Narkham

Let’s ask everybody to give us everything they haven’t any use for and then let’s have a Rummage Sale. Somebody will be willing to let us have an empty store for a day or so,” was the suggestion made one afternoon at a Junior League meeting. It was adopted enthusiastically and it seemed no time before the day arrived. If there were any misgivings as to patronage they were soon dispelled for there was a crowd about the counters most most of the time. There were many pathetic features as when mothers would be so grateful to be able to get little dresses and suits for ten and fifteen cents and there were many funny ones as when an inexperienced Junior League clerk would strive to do up in one neat parcel, a high silk hat, a dress, a vase and a picture frame. Nevertheless when the final returns showed two hundred dollars cleared for the Republic, it was the concensus of opinion that Rummage Sale “blesseth him that gives and him that takes.”

However the most important undertaking of this year has been to secure churches where Mr. Waterhouse and the boys may tell of the Republic. In this way Pasadena people are learning of the actual value, purpose and results of the work and many are being reached who never heard of it before.

The League has taken charge of the subscriptions that come from Pasadena and in every instance where it is possible they call directly upon the subscribers. On this way they have a chance to keep in touch with those who are contributing.

The organization is not a social one in any sense. Sincere belief in the Junior Republic is responsible for whatever it has accomplished. While it numbers twenty-six names on its list only eighteen of these are active members. The officers are;

President

Miss Carolyn Tompkins

Vice president
Miss Laura Ware

Treasurer
Miss Alice Lyman
Secretary
Miss Dorothy Vandevort”
