“One March 13, 1774, John Waller, John Shackleford, Reuben Ware and Ivison Lewis were arrested, but the last named was dismissed, having not preached in the county. On the 21st they were brought to trial. Bond was offered them, which Ware and Shackleford gave, but Waller, doubting the propriety of giving bond, went back to jail, where he remained fourteen days and then considered to give bond. Imagine this man locked up with drunken and profane beings!”
