Lois C. Ware Obituary, 2018

Lois C. Ware Surrounded by family, Lois C. Ware passed away peacefully February 16, 2018 in Wayland, Mass. Born April 26, 1932 to Ruth & Kendall Crossfield in Northampton, Mass., Lois grew up in Jamaica Plain, Boston. She attended Girls’ Latin School and Vassar College. In 1953 she married Robert (Bob) Ware Jr., her beloved husband of 55 years. Lois is remembered by her children, Marian & Rich Ware, Will Ware, Anja & Bob Ware, Martha Ware, and their families; by her brother-in-law Lawrence Close, nieces Amy Close Nagy & Sue Findlay, nephew Matthew Close, and their families. Blessed with six grandchildren and two great granddaughters, Lois was preceded in death by her husband Bob and her sister Priscilla Close. Lois taught Bob to sail on the Charles River, sparking their never-ending passion for boating. She loved sailing, swimming, fishing, and digging clams, and taught her children to do all these things. She collected, built, and fixed wooden boats. A regular at the Traditional Small Craft Weekend at Mystic Seaport, Lois also volunteered at the Norwalk Maritime Center’s boat shop. Lifetime members of the U.S. Power Squadron, Lois and Bob certified hundreds to safely captain boats on New England waters through boating and seamanship courses. She was among the first women to achieve the rank of Navigator, and she served as Penfield Power Squadron’s Education Officer for a decade. Bucking gender roles, Lois lived as she pleased. Her love of the sea and interests in tinkering and carpentry were rivaled only by her commitments to youth and education. Lois taught swimming and lifeguard certification at Lake Hills, in addition to teaching Junior Great Books, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Sunday School, and supporting the family in Boy Scouts. With her family she hosted more than 15 international students through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. She and Bob shared their love of nature with the children, camping and cruising along the Eastern seaboard and the Canadian Maritimes, visiting National Parks and wildlife areas. They always kept the binoculars close to spot local birds and animals. In her youth, Lois visited her Great Uncle Will in Rowley, Mass. After father Kendall bought the adored family cottage on the nearby marsh, Lois and her mother shared a friendly competition to see who could swim the latest each year. (Lois held the all-time record—late November!) Such was their love of the water that, in retirement, she and Bob moved to the shoreline in Lake Hills and wintered in the Florida Keys. Lois will be sorely missed by all those lucky enough to know her. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on May 26, 2018, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport, CT. Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following: Diabetes Foundation, The Dolphin Research Center, Great Books Foundation, LymeDisease.org, National Breast Cancer Foundation, National Park Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and Penfield Sail & Power Squadron.”Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ~ Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows.
