Helen Marie Ware Obituary, 2017

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. On July 17, 2017, Helen Marie Ware went home to be with her beloved Lord and Saviour. She was preceded in death by her daughter Leaette Woodfin, husband Marvin Ware of 38 years, and daughter Pauletta Ware. She is survived by her daughter Kimberly Williams (Jim) of Westminster, CO; granddaughter Samantha Woodfin of Allentown, PA; grandsons Tyler Williams of Westminster, CO, Cody Williams of San Antonio, TX; brother Shorty Rantz of Los Alamos; sister Nedra of Missouri; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was born in Reeds Springs, MO, to Roy and Elizabeth Rantz. She was one of 11 siblings. Her family moved to California and worked picking peaches in the Central Valley. Her future husband’s family also worked there in the peach orchards. Helen saw Marvin and tried to get his attention so she threw a peach at him. Three weeks later, she married the love of her life on November 3, 1956 in Ceres, CA. In 1958, they moved to Lompoc and Marvin worked at JM. In 1961 the couple and their two daughters moved to Los Olivos, CA. They joined Berean Baptist Church where Helen has been a member ever since. She served the Lord faithfully in many ways including as church secretary. In 1980, they moved to Los Alamos, but continued attending Berean Baptist Church.

Helen loved people. Her life was about putting others first. She was very outgoing and always willing and ready to volunteer at potlucks and socials helping her friends, relatives and neighbors any way that she could. She was a housewife and mother to a tee. She was about her husband and children. Very involved with supporting the girls in 4H through their early years. After the girls had grown Helen started working outside the home. She worked at the Danish Mill Bakery from 1988 until 2004 where she served up Danish pastries with a sweet smile. From 2007 until 2010 she worked as a teacher’s aide at College Elementary School for the kindergarten class. She loved children and they loved her. She was an avid reader. She would rather read a good book than watch a program on TV. She knew her Bible well and enjoyed her weekly Bible Study in Los Alamos. She was always in Church on Sunday unless she was sick or on vacation. She loved singing the old hymns and had many favorites including “Blessed Assurance”, “When We All Get to Heaven” and her favorite “At Calvary”. She will be missed by all whose life she has touched.

There was a memorial service at the Loper Funeral Chapel in Ballard, CA celebrating Helen’s life on Saturday, July 22nd. Following the service there was a reception at the Senior Center in Los Alamos. Cards and donations for expenses may be made to Kim Williams at P.O. Box 55, Los Olivos, CA, 93441.

To all that have graciously read this, Helen’s prayer would be that you would come to know Jesus and receive Him as your Lord and Saviour and be able to spend eternity with Him.

Loper Funeral Chapel, Directors.

David Randall Ware Obituary, 2016

WARE, David Randall It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, David Randall Ware, on June 28, 2016 at the age of 82. The cause was due to complications from colon cancer surgery. Dave, as he liked to be called, was a man of strength and determination. He was born in Rotan, Texas on March 16, 1934 to Minnie Jewel and Alfonso Ware during the Dust Bowl. He and his five brothers and sisters spent some of their early years as migrant farm workers and eventually made their way from Texas to California. Dave spent these difficult years caring for and nurturing his younger siblings while his parents worked. It was also during this time that he began his career as a cabinetmaker at the age of 16 by working for Jackson Bros. Cabinets. Dave met his wife of 55 years, Marianne Ware (nee: Horwitz) in Compton, California when he was a young man. He described this meeting as life changing as Marianne brought humor, intelligence and creativity to his life – all qualities that Dave possessed but needed encouragement to express. Marianne passed away in 2010. Dave and Marianne married and gave birth to three devoted daughters: Laurie Celli of Forestville, CA, Wendy Whitson of Petaluma, CA and Carrie Ware-Kawamoto of Pleasant Hill, CA. Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 13, 1953 and served dutifully as a Sergeant for three years. He was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Although Dave was a lifelong democrat and against the draft during the Vietnam War, his military service was a source of pride for him in later years. He volunteered at a local V.A. Center, sitting with Veterans and offering a caring ear and support. Dave moved his family from Southern California to Guerneville, California in the late 1960’s and never looked back. He loved the redwoods, the clear air and the privacy. It was here that he set up his own cabinet shop (Dave Ware Cabinets) on his property and found the peace and independence that he longed for. Dave could fix anything and enjoyed using his hands to build and create. He was a woodcarver, master cabinetmaker, played the banjo and auto harp and loved to sing folk songs. He also completed his A.A. degree at Santa Rosa Junior College on June 15, 1974 under the G.I. Bill. Dave was a family man at heart – he cared deeply for his daughters (Laurie, Wendy and Carrie), his sons-in-law (Michael Celli, John Whitson and Jon Kawamoto), his grandchildren (Angelo (Michelle), Vincent and Nicholas Celli, Gabriel and Rosemary Whitson, and Mia and Carly Kawamoto) and his great-grandchildren (Sofia, Dylan and Isabel Celli). He was a nurturing and present father who showed up for his children in all of the many ways he could (baking bread and cooking, helping with school projects, repairing things, building them furniture, and offering big bear hugs and “I love you” every time he talked to them). He will be greatly missed. Dave reconnected with old friends and made deep friendships with members of his grief support group during the last six years of his life. Those relationships brought him much joy and pleasure. Please join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, July 16th at 10:00 a.m. at 543 Clement St. in Santa Rosa.

Emily Ware Lake Obituary, 2016

Emily Ware LAKE Obituary
Emily Ware Lake was born August 8, 1920, in Nacogdoches, Texas and died on July 27, 2016 in Austin, Texas, her home of seventy years. She lived a long and beautiful life.

Raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, Emily remembered a happy childhood spent with her three siblings. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1938. She then attended Ouachita Junior College where her father, William Ware, was a professor of biology. In 1941, she married Peter Francis Lake, also of El Dorado, Arkansas. During WWII, Frank served in the Pacific, and Emily remained at home, teaching school. After the war, they settled in Austin and began their family of four children.

As a devout Christian, Emily belonged to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for over sixty years. She was an active member of the altar guild and lovingly needlepointed prayer cushions for the church. Emily drew tremendous comfort from her faith, especially following the death of her son, Kirby Scott Lake. Through her compassion and strong belief in God, she was an uplifting source of strength for others experiencing the pain of loss.

Music and art were constants in Emily’s life. While working as an assistant to the director of the University of Texas Art Museum, she cultivated a discerning eye, and began a collection that would include works by Michael Frary, Kelly Fearing and Martha Mood. As a founding member of Laguna Gloria Art Museum, she especially loved the annual Fiesta Art Festival, which supported local artists, and raised funds for the museum and art school.

Extensive travel in Europe fostered Emily’s creative and adventurous spirit. She played tennis and piano, was serious about her bridge game, and was known for her wonderful sense of style.

Throughout her life, Emily was happiest among friends and family, with whom she shared countless good times and good works. She loved to entertain, and joyously gathered loved ones in her home. During the Christmas season, she led caroling parties through the neighborhoods of Austin, delivering gifts to those in need. Friends remember many spirited evenings around the piano, singing and playing Broadway show tunes.

Emily was an engaged volunteer in a number of organizations, and a member of the Settlement Club, the Junior League of Austin, the Garden Club of Austin, Open Forum, Tarry House, and The Argyle Club. Also dear to her heart were Laity Lodge, St. Andrews Episcopal School, “Supper Club”, and the Austin Symphony.

Emily will be remembered for her contagious laugh, her tender heart and her expressive blue eyes.

She is preceded in death by her parents William and Bernice Ware, sisters Sara Ware Paulk, Mary Jo Ware Bass, brother William Carter Ware, son Kirby Scott Lake and her doted-upon King Charles Spaniels: Maggie, Tony and Lovey.

Emily is survived by her sons Randall Ware Lake and wife Lori of Lampasas, David Cordell Lake and wife Ellen of San Antonio, daughter Lucinda Lake Gerhart of Austin, grandchildren Jason Carr Lake, Andrew Peyton Lake, Emily Frances Gerhart, Katherine Ann Hicks, and her former husband, Frank Lake of Austin.

The family expresses heartfelt thanks to her doctor, Joseph Garcia, and all the many loving caregivers who attended to her needs and comfort toward the end of her life, especially those at Belmont Village and Halcyon Home Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Andrews Episcopal School, Laity Lodge, The Settlement Home for Children, or The Contemporary Austin Education Fund.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd located at 3201 Windsor Road, Austin, TX 78703 on Friday, August 5th at 2pm.
