James Ware

“WESTERN LUNATIC ASYLUM.

Our wants for the present, that are not within our ability to supply, happily are few. There is one, however, to which I must call your attention; a small tract of land, belonging to the heirs of James Ware, deceased, lying west, and adjoining the Asylum grounds, within a few hundred feet of the hospital building. Its control now becomes a necessity. Up to the present, when this land was not in the market, and could not be occupied, it has not been a matter of so much moment; but now, when offered for sale, and in small parcels, it affords inducements to purchase to vicious, dissolute, and thieving negroes and others, who may occupy it to the continual discomfort of our people, and constant depredations upon our place. The ownership of this land should certainly be obtained by the Asylum for its protection against the evils alluded to, and for the additional reason that its possession will add materially to the appearance of our grounds. Its value to us can hardly be over-estimated. I would earnestly urge its purchase at any reasonable price, with the confident expectation that your action will be sanctioned by the Legislature, and the money appropriated to pay for it without hesitation.”
