THE FLOOD OF MARCH, 1913.
It is impossible to say how many persons lost their lives directly and indirectly as a result of the flood of March, 1913. Many certificates were received showing as a contributory cause of death exposure and privations as a result of the flood. Some such returns were made months after the flood, and some pronounced diseases of short duration were given as the immediate cause of death, so that without being thoroughly conversant with the conditions it is impossible to say to what extent the flood conditions operated as a cause of death. Then, too, the contamination of water supplies and the effect upon housing conditions may, and probably did, operate as a predisposing cause of death in many instances of which no mention was made in certificates of death.
