Rev. Dr. Herbert Wendell Ware Obituary, 1976

“The Rev.Dr.H.W. Ware, 76, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church and resident of 314 Davis St., died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb 4th in Nella’s Inc.,where his condition had been critical for several weeks.
Dr. Ware had entered the Charleston Memorial Hospital in Charleston Sept. 25th, while there he suffered a cerebral hemmorage.
The Rev.H Wendell Ware was born March 20 1899, near Valley Head and was the son of the late Rev.Edgar Bertram and Ida Lee Hamilton Ware
He attended the schools of Randolph County and in June of 1916 was licensed to preach by the West Virginia Methodist Episcopal Church South Conference.
He received his AB Degree from Morris Harvey College in 1921 and was graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BD degree in 1924. Dr.Ware was admitted to the Western Virginia ME South Conference in 1921, was ordained as deacon in 1923 and as elder in 1925.
On Sept. 12, 1921, he married the former Ada Riggleman who survives in Elkins.
During 1965 Dr. Ware retired from active status with the West Virginia Conference of Methodist Churches and accepted a position as associate pastor of the Elkins First Methodist Church.
During his tenure with the WVa Conference, Dr.Ware served churches at Parsons, Gauley Bridge, Marmet, Kanawha City, Boothville, Ripley, Phelps Memorial in Parkersburg, Ravenswood,Louisa, Ky., St. Paul’s Church in Clarksburg,and Barboursville, was district superintendent in Fairmont District, Elkins First Church, Montgomery and the Temple of Fairmont.
Dr. Ware received his DD degree from Morris Harvey College, . He had served as a trustee at WV Wesleyan College, was a member of the executive committee of WV. Wesleyan trustees and had served as a member of the conference Board on Education for 20 years, serving as president from 1944 to 1948.
He was a member of the General Conference in 1944 a member of the Jurisdictional Conference in 1940 and 1944, had served as a trustee of Lake Junaluska Methodist Assembly, the Conference Board of Trustees and the Committee on Conference Relations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and one daughter the Rev.Virgil H Ware, associate director of the Conference Council of Ministries for the WV Conference of United Methodist Churches, Charleston and Mrs. Thomas W. (Harriet Lee) Greenwood, Memphis, Tenn. His stepmother Mrs.E.B Ware of Mill Creek seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother Dr. Virgil W. Ware Philadelphia, Pa.
Five half-brothers and five half-sisters also survive; Leslie B. Ware, Beverly, Edgar B.Ware Jr. Cleveland, Ohio, Edwin C. Ware, Weirton, William E. Ware, Fairmont. Wilbur K. Ware, New York City, Mrs. Anton (Leta)Stilin, Cleveland, Mrs. John (Evelyn) Knotts New Brighton, Pa, Mrs Thomas (Eugenia) Brock, Mill Creek, Mrs Samuel (Betty) Simms, Mannington, and Miss Pelba Ware, Weston.
One son Edgar G. Ware died May 5 1958. One brother, Victor Ware, and one sister Mrs. Dorothy Crickard, are also deceased.
Friends will be received at the John W. Lohr funeral home, 2-9 pm Friday. Dr. Ware will be moved to the First United Methodist Church Saturday at 10 a.m. where friends may pay their respects until 11 a.m. at which time Harper T Callison, pastor of the church and the Rev John Geary, Supt. of the Buckhanno District and Rev Dr.John B.F.Yoak Jr. associate pastor of Charleston will officiate. Interment wii follow in the Riggleman Cemetery near Monterville.”
