The Silver Star Medal has been awarded posthumously to Sp4 Beverly Costner Ware for gallantry in action April 1, in Vietnam. The presentation was made to his Mother, Mrs Janice H Ware of Mount Holly. Specialist Ware was assistant commander of a mobile strike force company during a reconnaissance-in-force mission when his unit encountered an enemy base camp and bunker complex. The heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire pinned down the lead platoon. Ware darted amongst his troops and gave directions and encouragement, also directing artillery and air strikes during several hours of fierce fighting. As his men moved forward for a final assault, they were again halted by intense fire. Maneuvering within hand grenade range of a main defensive bunker which had his lead element pinned down, Ware was mortally wounded by enemy automatic weapons fire seconds after he stood up to hurl the grenade which killed the occupants of the fortification.
