“The first school-house erected in the village of Lyndon stood a little west of the present site, and was a one-story frame building, thirty-six feet long and twenty-our feet wide, with two windows in each end and four in each side. The floor was inclined, and seats of pine made in the old style. The building was put up in 1840. The first teacher was Lewis Jessup, a graduate of Williams College, Massachusetts. Mr. Jessup taught three years, and had charge of the entire school consisting of seventy-five or eighty scholars, gathered from all parts of the county. This was the first school above the ordinary grade established in the county, and at which …Joseph Ware, …and many other prominent and influential sons and daughters of the early settlers received their early education.”
