Mrs. Mary Ware

“A GREETING TO FLORIDA.

BY MRS. MARY WARE.

Land of the beautiful, home of the sun,
I greet thee with pleasing emotion!

Thy sweet-scented flowers have wooed me to come,
And I sigh for the song of the ocean.

I’ve pictured in dreams thy beautiful clime—
The land that the sunbeam so loves—

Till my spirit has caught the anthem sublime
That bursts from thy emerald groves.

Ah! Nature has decked, with a prodigal hand,

The land of the orange and lime:
The frost-ling with blight, can never invade

The realm of this beautiful clime.

Soft music is gushing from evergreen bowers.
And birds of bright plumage are seen

Nestled amid the magnolia flowers

That glance through the emerald green.

‘Tis the voice of Nature that wooes me to come,
And my heart finds no music like here;

I’m longing to rest in this beautiful home.
And mingle my voice with hers.

Yes, land of the beautiful, home of the sun,
I greet thee with heart-felt emotion;

Thy sweet-scented flowers have wooed me to come.
And I love the wild song of the ocean.”
