Cpl. Joe L. Ware (1945 – 1968)

“Joe the son of Johnnie M. and “B” “H” Ware of East St Louis IL, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 16, 1965 in St Louis MO. Arriving in Vietnam on June 17, 1967 he was assigned to Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On the eighth day of Operation ALLEN BROOK, a two pronged attacked was launched by the Marines westward towards the village complex of Xuan Dai in Dien Ban District. The men of Company E uncovered some tunnels and both units came under sporadic sniper fire until mid-morning when the NVA launched a mortar attack followed by rocket propelled grenades and automatic weapon on the men assaulting through the complex. Company A moved it to support the Marines facing the enemy and both units managed force the NVA to withdraw. Marine losses were four men killed in action from both units and several wounded, one of the casualties was LCpl Ware who was killed in action as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds and hostile rifle fire.
