“Mabel Magdalene Mitchell Ware, 96, of Monroe, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at The Carrington. She was the wife of the late Victor Owen Ware, whom she had married on June 13, 1940. Born June 6, 1913 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Powhatan Pleasants Mitchell and Lily Coral Mitchell. Mrs. Ware retired from the Chapstick Company after forty-seven years of service and was a member of Elon Presbyterian Church. Mabel Ware lived a long and satisfying life. She was a graduate of Marcuse High School in Big Island. In 1949, she and her husband moved to a farm near her birthplace in the Naola area of Amherst County. She was active in New Prospect Baptist Church and later Elon Presbyterian Church. For a time after retiring in 1975, she continued her interests in gardening, cooking, visiting friends, and riding horses. As her health declined, she remained at home for awhile, with the loving assistance of Polly Dinkins, among others. For the last several years, she lived at The Carrington, where she found friends among the caring staff and the other patients, especially her late roommate, Thelma Blount, and a former neighbor, Eleanor Gillispie.
Mrs. Ware is survived by one sister, Helen M. Anderson and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mrs. Ware outlived her brothers, Powhatan, Jr., Willie, and Melvin; her sisters, Mildred, Grace, and Lucille; three half-sisters; and three half-brothers.

A funeral service will conducted at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 23, 2010 at the Elon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barry Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in El Bethel Cemetery at Allwood.

Family visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service.
