MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Ray D. Ware Sr., 72, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, in City Hospital. Born Feb. 23, 1925, in Canonsburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Dustin and Helen Mae Miller Ware. He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School. He was employed by Fairchild, Hagerstown and he retired from Veteran Affairs Medical Center. He served in U.S. Navy aboard the USS Gandy 764 DE, where he received a Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a member of Lodge 120, Loyal Order of the Moose, Newton D. Baker Post 896 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He contributed to a number of charitable organizations. He is survived by his former wife, Nettie Mae Ware; three daughters, Julia Ware Hedrick of Inwood, W.Va., Mary Elizabeth Otto and Linda Ware Stickell, both of Martinsburg; three sons, Ray Ware Jr. and James L. Ware, both of Inwood, W.Va., and John William Ware Sr. of Martinsburg; one half-sister, Ruth Parson of Martinsburg; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home. The Rev. James L. Richard will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery with military graveside services. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial donations may be sent to Berkeley County Humane Society, 1531 Charles Town Road, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.
