Florence G. Ware, 92, of Grand Island, formerly of Hershey, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Hershey. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery northwest of Hershey. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore in North Platte, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7. Florence was born July 4, 1916, to Rudolph E. and Winifred Vedder Peterjohn at the family homestead northwest of Hershey. Florence was the fourth of five daughters born to Lincoln County pioneers. She completed the 8th grade at the Lower Birdwood Country School and then transferred to North Platte High School to finish her education. Florence graduated in 1934 as salutatorian of her class and later taught in country schools to earn money for college. Florence entered the University of Nebraska’s College of Nursing in Omaha and graduated in 1941 as a registered nurse. She practiced nursing for many years at Memorial Hospital in North Platte and later worked in the office of North Platte surgeons Drs. Heider & Heider. On Jan. 25, 1942, Florence married Merle Ware at her parent’s farm near Hershey. For a short time, they farmed near Brush, Colo., before Merle was called to serve in the Army. After his discharge, the couple made their home back on the Ware family farm northeast of Hershey. Florence attended the United Methodist Church at Hershey where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She belonged to the Nichols Ladies Aid and the American Legion Auxiliary. After Merle’s death in December of 1991, Florence moved from the farm to an apartment in North Platte where she began serving as a health care volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. After many years of independent living, in 2005 she entered an assisted living facility in North Platte where she made her home until failing health prompted her move to Grand Island in November 2008. Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Anthony and Joyce Ware Palermo of East Aurora, N.Y., and Daniel and Janet Ware Novotny of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Valerie Ware of Glenwood, Iowa; a sister, Laura Downs of North Platte; four grandchildren, Jennifer Novotny of Pueblo West, Colo., Dale Novotny of Laramie, Wyo., Matt and Marissa Ware of Glenwood, Iowa; a great-grandson, Lucas Ehlers of Pueblo West; many nieces, nephews and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Ware; her parents; a daughter, Mary Ann Ware in 2000; and three sisters, Fern Bille, Elsie Pollat and Nellie Katherine McCrone.
