Mary Ila Ware Klein Obituary, 2014

A resident of McLean, VA since 1965, died peacefully on December 13, 2014 at The Jefferson in Arlington, VA.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA to Robert Wright Ware and Anne McFall, she was raised in Havertown, PA and graduated from Notre Dame Catholic Girls’ High School in Moylan, PA. She graduated from Trinity College in Washington, DC with a B.A. in English literature. Prior to his death in 1986, Mrs. Klein accompanied her husband, Philip A. Klein, on Foreign Service assignments to Libya, Uganda, and the Sudan. She was manuscript editor for the book “Libya and the UN” by the late Sir Adrian Pelt, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations; taught English to paraplegic Ugandan men in a sheltered workshop in Kampala, where she also founded and edited the U.S. Embassy’s newsletter for the American community; and chaired the school board for the American International School in Khartoum as well as international women’s groups there. During home assignments, Mrs. Klein was editor-in-chief of the Alumnae Journal of Trinity College from 1981 to 1985 and an occasional organist for St. John’s Catholic Church in McLean. Before her marriage and after her husband’s death she was a reports officer for the Central Intelligence Agency’s Directorate of Operations.
In addition to her husband, her brother, William E. Ware, predeceased her. Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Klein (Carrie) of San Diego, CA, her two daughters, Patricia Young (Greg) of McLean and Madeline Fleckenstein (Stephen) of Arlington and four grandsons. Visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, December 17, Murphy’s Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1910 N. Randolph St., Arlington, VA, Thursday, December 18 at 10 a.m. Interment in Stockbridge, MA.
